How to run it

  1. 1

On a ball screen, the big's defender blitzes (hard show) the ball-handler with the on-ball defender.

  2. 2

Force the ball out of the handler's hands; the trailing defender recovers to the roller.

  3. 3

The blitzer recovers to their man after the pass.

  4. 4

10 reps; offense tries to punish the recovery.

Coaching points

  • Blitz with two hands up — trap the ball, don't just show.
  • The recoverer sprints to the roller; no easy layup.
  • Blitzer recovers late but must sprint — don't linger.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Screen offense
  • Recoverer

Why it works

The blitz is the most aggressive ball-screen coverage. The nugget: training the trap-then-recover sequence teaches the timing that makes a blitz disruptive without giving up the roll. In a game, a well-timed blitz forces a turnover or a bad pass — a kid who blitzes and recovers runs the defense's most aggressive coverage. This is how you blow up a pick-and-roll that an offense relies on.
