How to run it

  1. 1

On a side ball screen, the on-ball defender forces the ball baseline, 'icing' the screen.

  2. 2

The big defender levels off the screen, containing the drive.

  3. 3

Force the ball away from the middle and toward the baseline — no middle penetration.

  4. 4

    10 reps each side.

Coaching points

  • Force the ball away from the screen — 'ICE' it to the baseline.
  • The big levels off and contains; no middle drive.
  • Recover to shooters on the kick-out.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Screener
  • Ball-handler

Why it works

ICE takes away the middle, where the offense has the whole floor to attack. The nugget: forcing the ball baseline shrinks the offense's options to the corner and the help. In a game, middle penetration breaks a defense; ICE prevents it by funneling the ball to the baseline trap. A kid who runs ICE is part of a defense that protects the most dangerous area of the floor.
