How to run it

  1. 1

You help on a drive to the rim, leaving your shooter open.

  2. 2

The ball is kicked to your shooter; you sprint to close out and contest.

  3. 3

The contest must be in time to alter the shot without fouling.

  4. 4

    10 reps; rotate the helper.

Coaching points

  • Sprint, don't jog, to recover — the shooter is ready.
  • Chop the last steps to contest without fouling.
  • High hand on the shot; low stance if they drive.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • 2 shooters

Why it works

Help-and-recover is the most repeated team defensive action. The nugget: helping is only valuable if you recover — a slow recovery gives up the open three the offense wanted. In a game, the kid who helps and sprints back contests the kick-out that beats most defenders. This is the effort play that turns a good defender into a great one — you help, then you get back.
