How to run it

  1. 1

Play 4v4; defenders switch every screen and action.

  2. 2

Defenders must call 'switch' and immediately take the new assignment.

  3. 3

Offense attacks the mismatches switches create; defense recovers and helps.

  4. 4

Play to 11; switch offense/defense each game.

Coaching points

  • Call the switch loudly and early — before contact.
  • Take a wide stance on the switch to deny the roll.
  • Help the helper — if a switch creates a mismatch, the nearest defender helps.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Half court

Why it works

Switch defense neutralizes screening actions but creates mismatches. The nugget: training both the switch execution and the mismatch-recovery teaches the full switch-everything system. In a game, switching kills screening actions, but the team that recovers to mismatches wins — a kid who switches and helps is part of a defense that can't be screened into an open shot.
