How to run it

  1. 1

Drive the lane; a defender hits you with a pad on the gather.

  2. 2

Absorb the contact, keep your balance, and finish with a power layup.

  3. 3

Practice the and-one finish — go up strong and through.

  4. 4

10 reps each side; track and-one finishes.

Coaching points

  • Absorb the contact on the gather, then explode up.
  • Keep the ball high and protected through the hit.
  • Finish with the near hand, off the correct foot.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim
  • Pad/Defender

Why it works

Late-game finishes come with contact — the defense fouls to prevent the layup. The nugget: the kid who avoids contact gets blocked; the kid who gathers through it scores and gets the and-one. In a game, finishing through contact turns a contested layup into a three-point play. This is how elite finishers score in the paint when the defense is trying to foul, not just contest.
