Duration

Difficulty

How to run it

  1. 1

Drive hard at a cone (defender).

  2. 2

Plant the inside foot and push back 1 step (step-back) into a jumper.

  3. 3

Then practice the side-step (lateral push-off) the other direction.

  4. 4

10 makes each move, each side.

Coaching points

  • Attack first — the step-back only works if you threaten the drive.
  • Plant and push back explosively; don't fade forward.
  • Get squared in the air before the release.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim
  • Cones

Why it works

The step-back is the signature creator's move. The nugget: training it off a real drive threat (not a standstill) builds the footwork that generates clean separation against tight defense. In a game, late-clock offense lives on the step-back — a kid who can create space with a step-back gets a clean shot off against anyone. This is the move that lets a guard be their own offense when the play breaks down.
