How to run it

  1. 1

    Set a 5-second shot clock; start a half-court possession.

  2. 2

Players must create a shot or an open look before time expires.

  3. 3

Coach stops the play and asks: was that the right late-clock read?

  4. 4

    10 possessions; rotate the decision-maker.

Coaching points

  • With under 5 seconds, attack for a shot — don't reset.
  • Drive to create a shot, not to pass out of pressure.
  • Know the time without looking — feel the clock.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Half court
  • Defenders

Why it works

Late-clock execution decides close games. The nugget: training the under-5-second decision in isolation builds the decisiveness and shot-creation that end-of-quarter and end-of-game moments require. In a game, the last shot of a quarter or game is often the difference — a kid who can create a clean look in 5 seconds wins those moments. Late-clock IQ is how games are won at the buzzer.
