How to run it

  1. 1

Defensive rebounder chins the ball and scans three outlets (left, middle, right).

  2. 2

Coach tags one outlet as covered — the rebounder must find the open one.

  3. 3

Deliver a lead pass up the floor; the receiver finishes in transition.

  4. 4

10 reps, rotating the covered outlet each time.

Coaching points

  • Chin the ball and scan before passing — don't rush the outlet.
  • Lead the receiver away from the nearest defender.
  • Use a baseball or overhead pass for long advances; chest/bounce for short.

Why it works

Fast breaks start with the right outlet read. The nugget: training the scan-three-pick-the-open-one habit turns a rebounder into a transition initiator, not just a rebounder. In a game, the rebounder who scans and finds the open outlet starts a break that scores before the defense sets. A kid who reads the covered outlet and throws to the open one creates fast-break points from every defensive board.
