How to run it

  1. 1

Use a ball screen; the roller dives as you come off the screen.

  2. 2

Wait for the roller to come open, then deliver the pass on time — not early, not late.

  3. 3

A late pass lets the defense recover; an early pass is picked.

  4. 4

10 reps; vary the coverage to test the timing.

Coaching points

  • Wait for the roller to be open before you pass — patience.
  • Lead the roller to the rim, away from the defense.
  • Read the tag: hard tag = kick out, soft/no tag = roll pass.

Why it works

Roll-pass timing is the difference between a layup and a turnover. The nugget: the pass on time — when the roller is open but before the defense recovers — is the whole art of the pick-and-roll. In a game, a kid who times the roll pass delivers layups all game; one who's early or late wastes the action. This is the pass that elite pick-and-roll guards are paid millions to make.
