How to run it

  1. 1

5 offense vs a 2-3 zone; pass around to shift the zone.

  2. 2

When the zone over-shifts, skip the ball over to the weak-side corner or wing.

  3. 3

The skip must be firm and flat — no lob that lets the zone recover.

  4. 4

10 reps, then attack the shifted zone for a shot.

Coaching points

  • Skip when the zone commits to the ball side — that's the trigger.
  • A firm skip beats the zone's slide; a lob gets intercepted.
  • The receiver reads the closeout: shoot, drive, or swing.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Zone defense

Why it works

Zones win by shifting; the skip pass punishes the shift. The nugget: when a zone over-shifts to the ball, the weak side is wide open — a firm skip arrives before the zone can recover. In a game, the skip is the primary weapon against any zone — a kid who skips on time creates open shots that ball-side-only passers never see. This is how you beat a zone without needing to shoot over it.
