Difficulty
Beginner

How to run it

  1. 1

Get in a defensive stance: feet wide, knees bent, hands out, butt low.

  2. 2

Partner (or coach) moves side to side slowly about 6 feet each way.

  3. 3

Slide to mirror them, never crossing feet, staying an arm's length away.

  4. 4

Keep sliding for 30 seconds, then rest and repeat 4 times.

Coaching points

  • Stay low — don't bob up and down.
  • Push off the back foot; never let feet touch.
  • Hands active and visible; eyes on the partner's waist.

Equipment

  • None

Why it works

Crossing the feet is the #1 bad habit young defenders form. The nugget: when you cross your feet, you're off-balance for a split second — and that's exactly when the offensive player blows by you. Slow shadow sliding isolates the push-step mechanic so kids learn to move laterally without ever crossing over. This is the foundation of staying in front of your man, which is the single most valuable defensive skill in basketball.
