How to run it

  1. 1

Set 3 cones 5 feet apart in a line.

  2. 2

Start in a stance at the first cone; push-step to the second, then the third.

  3. 3

Slide back the other way without crossing feet.

  4. 4

4 reps down and back; stay low the whole time.

Coaching points

  • Push off the back foot to move — don't step and drag.
  • Stay an arm's length from the cones.
  • No crossing feet, no bobbing up.

Equipment

  • Cones (3)

Why it works

This connects the stance (which kids can hold) to movement (which they can't yet do well). The nugget: defense isn't a stance, it's a series of quick push-steps — and the player who moves their feet fastest without crossing stays in front of their man. Adding cones gives a target and a distance, turning 'slide' into a measurable, repeatable skill. This is the literal footwork of guarding the ball in a game.
