How to run it

  1. 1

    Dribble forward at a jog.

  2. 2

On 'stop,' hop and land on both feet at the same time, knees bent.

  3. 3

Freeze in a balanced stance for 2 seconds.

  4. 4

Repeat 15 times down the floor.

Coaching points

  • Both feet land together — no staggered step.
  • Land soft and low, ready to pivot or pass.
  • Don't let momentum carry you forward.

Equipment

  • Basketball

Why it works

The jump stop is the legal, balanced way to catch on the move. The nugget: in a game, catching on the run and stopping is constant — and a staggered stop leads to travels and out-of-control finishes. The two-foot jump stop lets a player catch, get balanced, and then pass, shoot, or pivot from a strong base. It's the foundation of every controlled finish and every legal post move.
