How to run it

  1. 1

One player starts a fast break with the ball up the middle.

  2. 2

Two teammates sprint to fill the left and right lanes wide.

  3. 3

The ball-handler passes to the open lane for a layup.

  4. 4

Rotate roles each rep; 8 reps.

Coaching points

  • Sprint wide — don't run behind the ball-handler.
  • Fill the lane closest to you, not the same one as a teammate.
  • Show your hands and call for the ball.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Full court

Why it works

Fast breaks are where the easiest points come from, and young kids all chase the ball. The nugget: a break works because the defense can't cover all the lanes — but only if your teammates actually fill them wide. A kid who learns to sprint wide and fill a lane turns a 1-on-2 into a 3-on-2 and gets easy layups all game. This is how good teams score in transition without needing a single dribble move.
