How to run it

  1. 1

You guard a player on the wing; the ball is on the opposite side.

  2. 2

Position yourself so you can see both your man and the ball without turning your head.

  3. 3

When the ball is passed, jump toward the ball, then recover to your man.

  4. 4

Coach passes around; you shift on every pass. 10 reps.

Coaching points

  • Stand in the passing lane — deny the easy catch.
  • One hand points to your man, one to the ball.
  • Move on the pass, not after the catch.

Why it works

Young defenders ball-watch and lose their man for backcuts. The nugget: 'see man, see ball' is the single most important defensive concept — it lets you help on the ball without losing your assignment. A kid who masters this never gets backcut and is always in position to help. This is the foundation of all team defense: every defender is responsible for their man AND ready to help a teammate, all at once.
