How to run it

  1. 1

In a small group, pass the ball to a teammate.

  2. 2

Immediately after passing, cut or move to a new spot.

  3. 3

The receiver passes again; everyone keeps moving after each pass.

  4. 4

Play keep-away from a defender in the middle for 30 seconds.

Coaching points

  • Move the moment you let go of the ball.
  • Cut with purpose to open space, not random running.
  • Communicate — call for the ball by name.

Equipment

  • Basketball

Why it works

Standing after passing is the most common young-player mistake. The nugget: a player who passes and stands is easy to guard — the defense ignores them. A player who passes and moves forces the defense to react, creates passing lanes, and gets open for return passes. This is the heartbeat of all team offense: ball movement plus player movement. Kids who learn 'pass and move' early play the game the right way forever.
