How to run it

  1. 1

Tape a square on the floor 2/3 of the way to the wall.

  2. 2

Stand 10 feet out; bounce-pass so the ball hits the square and arrives at the wall at chest height.

  3. 3

    10 reps right-handed step, 10 reps left.

  4. 4

Move back 2 feet and repeat once the target is hit consistently.

Coaching points

  • The bounce point — not the release — decides where the ball arrives.
  • Snap the wrists for backspin so the bounce is predictable.
  • Step toward the target for power and accuracy.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Wall
  • Tape

Why it works

A visual target on the floor turns the abstract 'bounce it 2/3 of the way' into a concrete aim point. The nugget: the bounce pass is the safest pass in basketball — it goes under the arms of reaching defenders, which is why it's the pass used to feed the post and hit cutters in traffic. The bounce point is everything: too close and it's stolen, too far and it's uncatchable. Mastering it young makes a kid a reliable passer when defenders are present.
