How to run it

  1. 1

Toss the ball at the rim from 4 feet out (intentional miss).

  2. 2

Jump and reach with both hands high to grab the rebound before it falls.

  3. 3

Come down with it and immediately go back up to score.

  4. 4

    10 reps, tracking put-back makes.

Coaching points

  • Always two hands — one-hand rebounds get stripped.
  • Go up strong; don't tip-toe for it.
  • Catch and go right back up — no bringing it down.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim

Why it works

The offensive rebound put-back is one of the highest-percentage plays in basketball. The nugget: most young kids watch the shot and don't move — the kid who goes to the rim with high hands every time gets easy baskets no one else does. Training the catch-and-go-right-back-up habit turns a missed shot into a second-chance point, which is how scrappy players score without being the best shooter on the team.
