How to run it

  1. 1

Toss the ball high off the wall/backboard.

  2. 2

Jump with two feet and grab the ball at its highest point with both hands.

  3. 3

Land balanced, bring the ball to chin level, elbows out (chin the ball).

  4. 4

    Repeat for 10 reps.

Coaching points

  • Jump off two feet for control.
  • Grab with two hands whenever possible.
  • Protect the ball at the chin immediately.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Wall or backboard

Why it works

Rebounding is timing plus two-hand toughness. The nugget: the player who times the jump and grabs with two hands gets the ball, even over taller players. Tossing the ball high lets a young player practice the jump-and-grab rhythm safely. In a game, the rebounder who chins the ball immediately doesn't get stripped — which is why this habit turns a rebound into a possession, not a turnover.
