How to run it

  1. 1

Start under the rim; offense catches on the wing ready to shoot.

  2. 2

Sprint out, chop the last two steps, get a hand up on the shot.

  3. 3

Offense drives on your closeout; contain and force a tough finish.

  4. 4

    10 reps; switch roles.

Coaching points

  • The chop is what lets you react — without it, you're beat.
  • High hand on the shot, then drop to contain the drive.
  • Force the offense toward help, not the open sideline.

Why it works

Every defensive possession starts with a closeout. The nugget: isolating the full sequence — sprint, chop, contest, contain — builds the habit chain that good perimeter defense requires. In a game, the closeout decides whether the shooter gets an open look or a contested one. A kid who closes out under control contests the shot AND contains the drive, which is the complete defensive possession in one skill.
