How to run it

  1. 1

On a ball screen, the big's defender hedges (shows) hard above the screen.

  2. 2

Force the ball-handler wide and away from the rim.

  3. 3

The on-ball defender fights over the screen and recovers; the hedger recovers to the big.

  4. 4

10 reps; offense tries to punish the recovery.

Coaching points

  • Hedge with two hands up — show hard but don't commit to the trap.
  • Force the ball wide, then sprint back to your man.
  • The on-ball defender must fight over quickly to recover.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Screener
  • Ball-handler

Why it works

The hedge is the most common ball-screen coverage. The nugget: it disrupts the ball-handler without giving up the roll — show hard, then recover. In a game, a well-timed hedge blows up a pick-and-roll and forces a reset. A kid who can hedge and recover runs the defense's most-used coverage, which is how teams neutralize the pick-and-roll that every offense runs.
