How to run it

  1. 1

4 defenders in a shell around the key; 4 offense around the perimeter.

  2. 2

Offense passes around the perimeter (no dribble first). Defenders shift: ball, deny, help, help.

  3. 3

Add drives — defenders help and recover on the kick-out.

  4. 4

Add cuts and screens; defenders communicate and switch.

Coaching points

  • Ball-you-man: see all three in your vision.
  • Jump to the ball on every pass — don't watch the ball fly.
  • Talk constantly: 'ball,' 'help,' 'screen,' 'switch.'

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • 4 offensive players

Why it works

Shell drill is the universal team-defense teacher because it isolates each defender's role (ball, deny, help) before adding complexity. The nugget: every defensive system builds on these principles — ball-you-man vision, jump to the ball, and help-and-recover. In a game, a team that shifts as a unit on every pass has no gaps to attack. A kid who learns the shell becomes part of a defense that's greater than the sum of its players.
