How to run it

  1. 1

5 offense breaks; the defensive big is the last man back.

  2. 2

The first defender back stops the ball at half court.

  3. 3

The rest sprint back, find their man, and build the shell.

  4. 4

Goal: no easy transition layups; force a half-court possession.

Coaching points

  • First priority: stop the ball — sprint to the ball-handler.
  • Second priority: protect the rim with the last defender.
  • Sprint, find, communicate — in that order.

Why it works

Games are won and lost in transition. The nugget: training the stop-ball-then-build sequence turns a chaotic retreat into an organized defense that prevents the easiest baskets. In a game, most easy points come in transition before the defense sets — a kid who sprints back and stops the ball turns a layup into a half-court possession. Transition defense is pure effort and discipline, and it's where games are quietly decided.
