How to run it

  1. 1

Catch on the wing; defender reaches across your body.

  2. 2

Rip the ball forcefully through and below their arm, then drive.

  3. 3

Read: rip-and-drive if they reach; rip-and-shoot if they back off.

  4. 4

    10 reps each side.

Coaching points

  • Rip with force — move their arm, don't just dodge it.
  • Keep the ball below the defender's hands on the rip.
  • Explode into the drive the instant you clear the arm.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Defender

Why it works

Reaching defenders give the offense a free advantage — if you know how to take it. The nugget: the rip-through converts defensive aggression into an immediate driving lane. In a game, a defender who reaches is off-balance — a kid who rips through them gets a free path to the rim or a foul. This is how you punish over-aggressive defense and turn a defender's mistake into points.
