How to run it

  1. 1

4 offensive players spaced around the arc; the ball-handler drives the gap.

  2. 2

As help collapses, read which defender helps and pass to the man they left.

  3. 3

The receiver can shoot, drive the closeout, or swing it.

  4. 4

Play to 7 with live defense.

Coaching points

  • Drive to draw two, not to score through two.
  • See the open man before you leave your feet.
  • The kick-out's receiver reads the closeout: shoot or drive.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • 4 offensive players
  • Defenders

Why it works

Spacing-and-drive offense lives or dies on the help read. The nugget: training the drive-to-draw-then-kick habit creates the open threes that power every modern offense. In a game, a drive that draws two defenders has done its job if you kick to the open shooter. A kid who reads the help and kicks becomes a playmaker who generates open shots for the whole team — this is how high-scoring offenses are built.
