How to run it

  1. 1

5 offensive players vs 4 defenders in a diamond press.

  2. 2

Inbound and reverse the ball quickly; hit the cutter up the sideline.

  3. 3

No dribbling past half court — pass to advance.

  4. 4

Score within 12 seconds or it's a turnover.

Coaching points

  • Cut to the ball — don't wait for the pass to reach you.
  • Reverse the ball to shift the press before attacking.
  • The middle player is the safety valve; use them.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • 4 cones as defenders

Why it works

Presses die to ball reversal and passing, not dribbling. The nugget: forcing pass-only advancement trains the spacing and reversal habits that dismantle any full-court pressure. In a game, a team that passes through a press scores easy baskets; one that tries to dribble through it turns it over. A kid who learns press-break passing becomes part of a team that can't be pressured, which is a huge advantage late in games.
