How to run it

  1. 1

One shooter, one offensive rebounder, one defensive rebounder under the rim.

  2. 2

    Coach shoots an intentional miss.

  3. 3

Both rebounders fight for position; offensive tries to score, defensive tries to chin and outlet.

  4. 4

Play until a score, rebound, or out-of-bounds. 5 reps then rotate.

Coaching points

  • Defender: find, contact, box out before pursuing the ball.
  • Offensive: swim or spin move the box-out to get inside.
  • Go up strong with two hands; finish through contact.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim

Why it works

Live rebounding with consequences builds the toughness and technique that drill reps can't. The nugget: the physical, competitive frame is what transfers to game rebounding. In a game, rebounds are fought for, not caught — a kid who battles in War rebounding goes and gets the ball in traffic. This is how you build the rebounder who ends possessions and starts fast breaks, the most valuable role on any team.
