How to run it

  1. 1

Use the lane lines as walls — offense can't dribble outside them.

  2. 2

Offense tries to beat the defender to the rim within 5 seconds.

  3. 3

Defender slides, cuts off, and contests without fouling.

  4. 4

    Rotate offense/defense every 3 reps.

Coaching points

  • Beat the ball to the spot — force the dribbler sideways.
  • Stay between ball and basket at all times.
  • Contest with the near hand up; no reaching.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Court lane

Why it works

The tunnel removes the escape valve. The nugget: the core of on-ball defense is forcing the ball sideways, not backward — a defender who turns the dribbler repeatedly wins. The tunnel forces the defender to learn to cut off angles in a controlled space. A kid who masters this stays in front of their man in the open floor, because the same angle-cutting applies whether the lane is 12 feet wide or the whole court.
