How to run it

  1. 1

Catch the ball in triple-threat at the wing.

  2. 2

Jab hard toward the rim with the strong foot; if defender leans, drive past.

  3. 3

If defender doesn't bite, jab and pull back into a jump shot.

  4. 4

Practice both reads for 10 reps each side.

Coaching points

  • Jab with purpose — sell the drive.
  • Keep the ball protected during the jab.
  • Read the defender's front foot before deciding.

Why it works

The jab makes the defender commit first, so the offense can read and react. The nugget: it's the foundation of triple-threat basketball and the first real 'read' a young player learns. In a game, a jab that sells the drive forces the defender to lean — then you go the other way. A kid who jabs and reads becomes a threat from a standstill, which is how you beat a defender who's set and waiting.
