How to run it

  1. 1

Catch in the post; defender crowds you with active hands.

  2. 2

Sweep the ball low across your body and pivot away from the pressure.

  3. 3

Read: if the defender reaches, drive baseline; if they sag, face up and shoot.

  4. 4

    8 reps each pivot foot.

Coaching points

  • Sweep below the defender's hands, never above.
  • Pivot on the foot away from the defender to protect the ball.
  • Stay low through the sweep — high ball gets stripped.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Defender

Why it works

Pressure turns the ball over when players panic. The nugget: the sweep-and-pivot is a calm, repeatable escape move that creates space and a clean read every time a defender crowds the catch. In a game, pressure comes on every post catch and trap — a kid who sweeps low and pivots away keeps the ball and finds the open play. This is the poise that separates ball-secure players from turnover-prone ones.
