Coaching points

  • Get square to the rim before you release.
  • Read the defender's recovery before deciding shot or drive.

Why it works

When a defender takes away your first move, you need a counter. The nugget: the reverse pivot is the counter that creates a clean shot when the drive is cut off — it turns a dead end into an open look. In a game, defenses take away your first option; a kid with a reverse-pivot counter always has a second move, which is what makes a scorer hard to stop. One-move players get shut down; two-move players don't.
