How to run it

  1. 1

Stand on the wing; defender overplays the passing lane.

  2. 2

Take a step toward the ball to draw the defender up, then cut hard backdoor to the rim.

  3. 3

Partner leads you with a bounce pass; catch and finish.

  4. 4

6 reps each side; mix in a front cut when the defender sags.

Coaching points

  • Read the defender's overplay — if they're in the lane, go backdoor.
  • Sell the step toward the ball before cutting back.
  • Cut at full speed and show a target hand.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Partner
  • Defender

Why it works

Overplaying defenders are begging to be backcut. The nugget: the backdoor cut is the punishment for a defender who cheats the passing lane — it turns their aggression into an easy layup. In a game, a kid who threatens backdoor keeps defenders honest, which opens up the catch and the front cut. Mastering both the backdoor (vs overplay) and front cut (vs sag) makes a player unguardable without the ball.
