How to run it

  1. 1

Pass to your partner on the wing and cut hard to the basket.

  2. 2

Partner can return the pass for a layup, or fake and keep it.

  3. 3

Read: if the defender follows, cut backdoor; if they ball-watch, cut to the ball.

  4. 4

8 reps each as passer and cutter.

Coaching points

  • Cut at full speed — a jog gets you nothing.
  • Time the cut to leave as the ball leaves your hands.
  • Show a target hand on the return cut.

Why it works

Motion offense is just repeated pass-and-cut. The nugget: this drill trains the read that powers it — whether to cut to the ball or backdoor, decided by how the defender reacts to your pass. A defender who ball-watches gets backcut for a layup; one who follows gets sealed. This is the engine of all team offense, and a kid who reads the defender's reaction on every pass scores easy baskets all game.
