Difficulty

How to run it

  1. 1

Stand 15 feet apart. 10 chest passes, focusing on stepping in.

  2. 2

10 bounce passes — ball should bounce 2/3 of the way and arrive at waist height.

  3. 3

10 overhead passes — release above the forehead, snap wrists.

  4. 4

Add movement: partner cuts laterally, lead them with the pass.

Coaching points

  • Bounce pass needs backspin and the right bounce point.
  • Overhead pass uses wrists, not a full arm throw.
  • Lead the receiver — pass to where they're going, not where they are.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Partner

Why it works

Mastering all three passes gives a player the right tool for every situation. The nugget: bounce under arms, chest in the open floor, overhead over the defense. Leading a moving receiver — passing to where they're going, not where they are — is the skill that turns a pass into an assist. A kid who can deliver all three passes on the move becomes a true point guard, not just a kid who can pass when standing still.
