Difficulty
Intermediate

How to run it

  1. 1

Grab a rebound, pivot to the sideline, and chin the ball.

  2. 2

Throw an overhead outlet pass to your partner breaking up the floor.

  3. 3

Lead the partner up the sideline with the pass.

  4. 4

10 reps each as rebounder and outlet.

Coaching points

  • Pivot to face the sideline before you pass — don't throw blind.
  • Chin the ball to protect it through the pivot.
  • Lead the outlet up the floor, not behind them.

Equipment

  • Basketball

Why it works

Every transition starts with the outlet. The nugget: the team that outlets fast scores easy baskets before the defense sets — the team that walks it up plays 5-on-5 half-court every time. Training the pivot-and-throw in isolation makes the start of the break automatic. A kid who outlets quickly turns a defensive rebound into a fast-break point, which is the most efficient offense in basketball.
