How to run it

  1. 1

Toss the ball off the rim/backboard.

  2. 2

Jump and, instead of grabbing, tap the ball back up and out.

  3. 3

Keep tapping for 3 taps without letting it hit the floor.

  4. 4

    5 rounds of 3 taps.

Coaching points

  • Tap with fingertips up and out — never down toward the floor.
  • Time your jump to meet the ball at its peak.
  • Taps keep the possession alive when a grab isn't possible.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim

Why it works

Sometimes the ball is out of grab-range but still recoverable. The nugget: the tap-out trains the soft fingertips that extend possessions and create second-chance points. In a game, a big taps a miss out to a guard for a reset, or taps it in — either way, the offense gets another shot. A kid who can tap keeps the ball alive when others watch it fall, which is how scrappy teams get extra possessions.
