Drive hard at a cone (defender).

  2. 2

Plant the inside foot, push back one step into a step-back jumper.

  3. 3

Then practice the drag screen pull-up from the same setup.

  4. 4

10 makes each move, each side.

Coaching points

  • Attack first — the step-back only works if you threaten the drive.
  • Plant and push back explosively; don't fade forward.
  • Get squared in the air before the release.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim
  • Cones

Why it works

Separation shots create space against tight defense. The nugget: the step-back only works if the defender believes the drive — attack first, then create space. In a game, late-clock offense lives on the step-back; a kid who can create a clean look with a step-back never needs a bailout pass. This is the creator's skill that lets a guard get a shot off against anyone, which is what every team needs in the last 5 seconds.
