Hesitation Pull-Out

Train the change-of-pace hesi that lulls then blows by a defender.

Difficulty
Intermediate

How to run it

  1. 1

Dribble hard at a cone, then pause — slow the dribble and rise slightly.

  2. 2

The instant the cone (defender) relaxes, explode past with a hard dribble.

  3. 3

Repeat past 3 cones; 4 reps down and back.

  4. 4

Mix the hesi with a crossover for a combo move.

Coaching points

  • The pause must look real — eyes up, body relaxed.
  • Explode out of the hesi, don't gradually speed up.
  • Change of pace beats change of direction at this age.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Cones (3)

Why it works

Defenders time rhythm. The nugget: the hesitation breaks that timing by selling a slowdown, then attacking the moment the defender settles. In a game, a defender who thinks you're pulling up relaxes for a split second — and that's when you blow by. Change of pace beats change of direction: a kid who can go fast-slow-fast keeps defenders off-balance all game without needing fancy moves.
