How to run it

  1. 1

Drive at a defender; they cut you off and trap the sideline.

  2. 2

Retreat-dribble backward and lateral to space, keeping the dribble alive.

  3. 3

Once you have space, re-attack or make the pass.

  4. 4

10 reps; never pick up the dribble during the retreat.

Coaching points

  • Stay low and protect the ball with your body on the retreat.
  • Keep eyes up — find the open man while retreating.
  • Retreat to re-attack, not to give up the possession.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Defender

Why it works

Young players panic and pick up the dribble when trapped, killing the offense. The nugget: the retreat dribble is the pressure-escape move that keeps the offense alive — you back out to space, then re-attack or pass. A kid who can retreat-dribble never gets stuck dead with the ball, which is the #1 way young guards turn it over. Keeping the dribble alive means keeping your options open.
