Passer stands at the top; you start at the wing.

  2. 2

Sprint to a spot, hop into the catch, and shoot without dribbling.

  3. 3

5 makes at each of 4 spots around the arc.

  4. 4

Track time-to-shot — aim to release within 0.5 seconds of the catch.

Coaching points

  • Hop into the catch with feet shoulder-width, ready to shoot.
  • Hands up as a target; catch and rise in one motion.
  • Don't dip the ball — catch it in the shot pocket.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim
  • Passer

Why it works

The hop pre-loads the legs and squares the feet before the ball arrives. The nugget: in a game, the difference between an open shot and a contested one is a fraction of a second — the defender closes out the moment you catch. The hop shaves that fraction off your release by having your feet and legs ready the instant the ball hits your hands. A kid who catches and shoots in one motion gets clean looks all game; one who catches and dips gets blocked.
