How to run it

  1. 1

Develop a 3-step routine: dribble, set feet, breathe and shoot.

  2. 2

Shoot 20 free throws using the exact same routine every time.

  3. 3

Track makes; the goal is routine consistency, not just makes.

  4. 4

If you change your routine mid-set, that rep doesn't count.

Coaching points

  • The routine calms you — same steps, same breath, same shot.
  • Lock in feet behind the line before you bounce.
  • Hold the follow-through and watch the ball's path.

Equipment

  • Basketball
  • Rim

Why it works

Free throws are the only shot with zero defensive and time pressure, so consistency is everything. The nugget: a fixed routine removes decision-making and lets muscle memory take over — which is exactly what you need when the game is on the line and your heart is pounding. The kid with a routine shoots the same in the first quarter and the last; the kid without one falls apart under pressure. Free throws win close games.
